Barb’s story- Ulcerative colitis, skin, allergies, inflammation

“In November 2009, my life changed overnight.  I had awakened one morning with diarrhea.
Every time I would eat, my food went right through me.  My doctor tested me for parasites and eventually sent me to a gastroenterologist.  I was scheduled for a colonoscopy on Dec. 18th; the results showed I had ulcerative colitis.

While all of this was going on, I began a very strict diet called SCD (specific carbohydrate diet).  A friend of mine at church had a son with Crohn’s disease and the diet made his health improve dramatically.  I stayed on the diet (never cheated) yet continued to have diarrhea every time I ate.  I lost quite a lot of weight and began to be frightened that I wasn’t going to overcome this.   But on Christmas Day, about 6 weeks after starting the diet, my diarrhea stopped.  I faithfully stayed on this strict diet and had no more symptoms of the colitis.

Fast forward to the summer of 2011 (2 years later)….I had noticed a red spot behind my knee.  I originally thought it was an insect bite.  During the next few months, a few more red spots appeared.  It wasn’t until I met with some other SCD friends that December that I realized any connection to my other health problems.  One of these friends told me about her friend who has Crohn’s who didn’t join us that day because she had red open sores all over her face.  I asked “From the Crohn’s?”  She replied, “Yes”.  I had never heard of such a thing!   It still never clicked until a few days later I was telling my husband about that conversation.  All of a sudden, it hit me….”I bet my spots are from my colitis!!”  When I googled “red spots and colitis”, all sorts of links came up.   I was distraught!  I thought I had been doing so well; I knew if I went back to my doctor, she would put me on a steroid or some other medication to make the spots go away.

That’s when I began seeking out a naturopathic doctor.  As I was searching, I read about Dr. Reena Singh.  She herself had once had ulcerative colitis.  I knew she was the doctor I needed to see!

Dr. Singh has made such an impact on my life.  I am so very, very thankful for her help and expertise.  In April 2012, we met to thoroughly discuss my health history.  She had me do a lot of blood work and urinalysis.  With those test results, she was able to plan my recovery to good health.  The tests showed many areas of concern, but I particularly remember that my adrenal glands were depleted/not working properly.  My body was filled with inflammation.  Dr. Singh had me begin a regimen of supplements, enzymes, protein, and homeopathic remedies.   I also made some changes in my diet.  Dr. Singh said that when my gut was healed, my spots would go away.  I am happy to say that my spots have gone away; and I believe I am definitely on the road to good health again.  “Find the Root Cause” is her motto.  Instead of just treating the symptoms like most physicians would do, Dr. Singh finds the root cause.  I am so thankful for all she has done for me!”
